New Daily Schedule for Grades 6-12

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, Brentwood Middle School and Brentwood High School will implement a new daily schedule. This update reflects the district’s continued commitment to advancing the goals of its strategic plan — specifically, creating innovative teaching and learning experiences and expanding opportunities for individualized learning pathways.

This new schedule follows a modified block model and was developed through a months-long, collaborative process involving teachers, counselors and administrators, with input from a variety of stakeholder groups. Its design was guided by clearly defined priorities and informed by a review of model schedules from districts across the region.

This approach allows our schools to better respond to individual student needs, strengthen connections between students and teachers, and create shared time across both buildings to support students and foster a strong sense of school community.

One key change is the shift from eight to seven academic periods. This adjustment is paired with an update to the district’s graduation requirements, approved by the Board of Education in February 2026. The revised requirements more closely align with Missouri standards and reflect those of many St. Louis County school districts.

New Middle School Schedule

A modified block schedule combines shorter daily class periods with longer instructional blocks on select days. This structure provides students with consistent, daily contact with their teachers while also allowing extended time for deeper learning, collaboration and hands-on activities.

The schedule also includes dedicated time for Advisory and FLEX, creating built-in opportunities for student support, connection and enrichment throughout the week.

We know a new schedule brings questions. Below are answers to some of the most common topics, including how the schedule is structured, what FLEX time means for students and how these changes support learning.

Why are we moving to a modified block schedule?

A modified block schedule provides more frequent opportunities for students to connect with their teachers throughout the week, helping reinforce learning on a regular basis. It also increases instructional time for most courses.

By combining shorter daily classes with longer periods on select days, teachers can better match their instruction to the needs of their content — offering time for practice, collaboration and hands-on learning, as well as deeper study or labs.

What is FLEX and why are we adding it?

FLEX provides dedicated time during the school week for students to receive extra support, enrichment or make up missed work — without missing instructional time.

It also gives students more voice and choice in how they use their time to meet their individual learning needs. Students may use FLEX time to get help from a teacher, complete assignments or participate in enrichment opportunities.

By building this time into the schedule each week, students and staff have consistent opportunities to catch up, stay on track and strengthen connections through schoolwide activities — without taking time away from core classes.

Why did our graduation requirements need to be updated?

Our goal is to build strong, engaging learning pathways in each content area so students have meaningful choices throughout their high school experience.

Under the current requirements (28 credits) and an eight-period day, some courses have low enrollment, which makes it difficult to offer them consistently. Updating the requirements allows us to better align course offerings with student interests and ensure classes have enough enrollment to support a dynamic learning environment.

As a result, some courses may be offered in alternating years. This approach helps provide more consistent scheduling so students can plan ahead with greater confidence.

What is Advisory?

Advisory is a regularly scheduled time for students to connect with a small group of classmates and a staff member, build relationships and strengthen a sense of community. During Advisory, students also receive guidance on topics such as course selection, goal setting and overall school support. This time serves a similar purpose to the Advisory structure currently in place.

What other improvements come from this schedule?

The new schedule provides greater consistency for students with unique or flexible learning needs. This includes students participating in accelerated courses, internships, apprenticeships or employment for credit, as well as those attending part-time. Instead of navigating an A/B day rotation, students will follow a more consistent weekly schedule.

This approach also creates more consistent teaching schedules for shared staff and allows elective courses to meet daily during a quarter, expanding opportunities for student choice and participation.
